1. Ask yourself: How do you use your kitchen?

For folks who spend a lot of time in the kitchen, even small upgrades can enhance the cooking experience — rollouts for pots and pans, a waste basket pullout, glass doors, china cabinet, utility pantry or appliance garage are just a few of the options available.

“It’s a matter of determining which ones are right for you,” says Gallery Restoration owner Aaron Popowsky.

2. Know your inspiration.

Starting with your own ideas during a kitchen remodeling project is a key to creating a proper rendering. Design inspiration sites like Pinterest and Houzz are a great way to get them all in one place.

Popowsky recalls one client who requested quartzite, a translucent stone, be used for their countertop, and they asked for it to be under lit. “Under-the-counter lighting isn’t something we normally do,” he says, “nor do we use quartzite much. But it wound up looking great.”

3. Be practical.

Cabinetry, backsplash, flooring and countertops are the four major components in the kitchen, but steer clear of high maintenance items if you’re not prepared to maintain them. Wood is popular for flooring, but is it practical for you? Are you ready to constantly clean those glossy white cabinets?

Quartz is a great low-maintenance material. Something less practical would be a surface like marble or onyx. They’re more porous, and need to be sealed regularly and cleaned right after they’re used — not a good idea for families with active kids.

Having full trust and confidence in your expert is key. An experienced kitchen team can guide you in making the right choices for you. “If you don’t use the right materials,” says Popowsky, “it will come back to haunt you.”
