About

We’re all about GREEN – and we’re growing sprouts! Personal Beginnings: It all started when Saudia’s grandmother lost her battle to cancer. A housekeeper from the West Indies, she had inhaled toxic cleaning fumes for decades. Saudia’s family speculated – with plenty of evidence – that these chemicals had made her sick. Saudia (a former film publicist) was stricken with grief. She wanted her grandmother’s death to carry meaning. In 2006, GreenHouse Eco-Cleaning was born. From the start, GEC set itself apart. We researched the best, healthiest, most environmentally friendly products, then developed our own products for use by our cleaners during their cleaning and maid services – and for sale. A Real Community: But we didn’t stop there. Saudia’s grandmother had worked hard, but never had the opportunity to advance. We wanted to not only create jobs, we wanted to find, foster, and celebrate greatness for an underserved community. Today, we screen dozens of experienced cleaners. When we find one that aligns with our standards and mission, we hire him or her as an employee (a highly unusual move), and add to our growing family. GreenHouse’s philosophy is to be accountable. This means putting our home and commercial cleaners – our employees – through a rigorous training and educational curriculum. It means coaching, encouraging personal development, and caring deeply about our work and our people. In our weekly staff meetings, we create real ways to improve. Then we implement these for our commercial and residential clients. If you wonder if it works, just read our torrent of testimonials. Awards & Media Our unconventional way of doing business has gotten a lot of attention. We’ve been named New York Magazine’s “Best of New York.” We’ve been written about in The New York Times, Martha Stewart’s Whole Living Magazine, The Wall Street Journal, Crain’s NY, Bloomberg Businessweek, The Economist, Fortune Magazine, ABC World News, and more. Saudia herself is a LEED-certified green pioneer. In 2011, she won first place in the American Express OPEN Make Mine A Million $ Business Program. In 2012, GEC received the Black Enterprise Small Business People’s Choice Award. Saudia graduated from Goldman Sachs’ 10,000 Small Businesses. She sits on two U.S. Senate subcommittees (Small Business and MWBE), and volunteers for the Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE).
