We can see why this pristine 2-family on Macdonough Street has been featured on the Bedford Stuyvesant Brownstone tour. In addition to three sets of pocket doors on the Parlor floor alone, there’s wainscotting, original shutters and woodpaneling galore. While $799,000 is certainly on the higher end for a four-story houes in Bed Stuy, in this case it may be worth it. The three-over-one configuration is an attractive layout as well. The one thing we can’t discern from the photos on the listing is the quality–or even existence–of plasterwork. So if you’ve seen it, please let us know.
Macdonough Street [Corcoran]
Wesley, why don’t you just visit and see for yourself?
I’ve been inside. Although the house has nice mahogany woodwork on parlor level, the rest has been higly modernized. The upper floors are done nicely and in good taste, “california closets”, but the feel is more suburbia than brownstone. There is no crown molding on the ceiling in the combined living room dining room, it has square angles from walls to ceiling. Two of the original eight mantles are still there, the rest disappeared. The kitchen is the best room in the house-ceiling is stunning, spacious island, but even there– the countertops were finsihed in lavender formica! I kid you not. Also, at this price, there are larger interior than 18 x 42 available in the nabe. But I’m sure Corcoran will get the price, or close to it.
I’m fairly new to NY and I keep hearing about Bedford-Stuyvesant and that the area is going through some kind of renaissance. I currently rent a studio apt in Park Slope, and my girlfriend’s father who is a real estate broker says it’s the next hot spot. He told her that the artists and gays are moving there so in addition to real estate prices going up, cafes, restaurants and trendy shops will surely follow.
Her father and I don’t get along too well – he’s such a know it all. But anyway, does anyone know if this is true? I’m looking to buy something that’s relatively affordable here in Brooklyn.
Thanks.
I have not seen this house (there is an open house sunday), but based on the photos, this price actually doesn’t seem bad at all. Yes it’s the higher end, but it doesn’t seem like there is a lot of work to be done. There is a picture of a ceiling that looks incredible.
