A tipster recently sent in a photo of bicycle rentals at Grand Army Plaza, just across the street from On Prospect Park. It looked new to them and it definitely looks new to us. Anyone have the scoop on how long this setup has been around?

  1. >”Stopping short on the hills to avoid creaming an entire family is always tricky”

You’d think we are talkng about the f&(ing TOur De France. It’s a bicycle, not a tank. Are there SOME STUPID bicyclists who are likely to hit peds? Yes. It it likely? Does it happen? I’ve never seen it and I cycle regularly. If your kid cannot avoid a moving bicycle (s)he should not be out in public.

  2. Rob: Folding bikes are getting really popular these days for that reason. You can store them in a small closet but they ride just like a regular bike. Of course, if you own a really awesome bike, you can hang it on the wall like its artwork.

  3. “Oh Gawd! Imagine having to drive slowly, change lanes, and wait a little bit…”
Are you referring to all bike riders in general, or just those that blow through the red lights on the new bike lane?

  4. Oh Gawd! Imagine having to drive slowly, change lanes, and wait a little bit. It must be horrible… especially on a residential street on the weekend! Oh gawd. How do you get through the day?

  5. what a great idea — more bikes=less cars=better for the environment. in europe, it seems that many cities are already way more bicycle friendly. it’s great that NYC is finally catching up. i loved being a tourist in another country and being able to rent a bicycle. i hope tourists who visit our city will rent these bicycles too!

  6. Traffic calming by their definition… Let’s see if the number of accidents increase.

All it takes is several parked cars unloading their picnic gear or UPS truck double parked to bring traffic to a stand still. On some days it’s so bad you have to make a half dozen extra lane changes just to navigate the single open lane. Next time they should measure driver’s blood pressure, not just their speed.

I do, however, like the bike lane. They need a no parking, unloading/loading section near Harmony Playground.
