A friend of ours, who is planning on visiting us in Brooklyn this December (but is allegedly getting too old to sleep on our couch), told us that she priced out a room at the Gowanus Holiday Inn — but the best rate they had for Friday, December 1 was a whopping $252. Huh? Of course, we prefer Gowanus to Times Square, and few other NYC hotels grant such easy access to the coffin factories that line Union Street, but $252 is pushing it — even if you’re a big Six Feet Under fan…

Perhaps the onslaught of new Brooklyn Hotels will add some competition and lead to cheaper rates in the future. Sheepshead Bay just got a Best Western; the Marriott at the Brooklyn Bridge recently opened a 280-room extension; Downtown Brooklyn, Red Hook, and Sunset Park are all expecting Sheratons; and a 106-room Comfort Inn is being constructed in the less-than-cozy industrial area behind the Gowanus Houses. While we’re on the subject of hotels, has anyone been inside the Brooklyn Motor Inn? It looks like a shady truck stop from the outside, but rates are only $102.76 on week nights and $120.40 on weekends.

  1. As stated earlier, the month of December is peak tourism season for New York City area. All hotel rates are going to be high. She should probably reserve the room now and try to look for something else.

  2. Our very frugal brother in law stays at the Millenium Hilton whenever he’s in NYC. I bet they have pretty good rates and it’s convenient to Brooklyn. Only drawback is you have to stare down into the hole that was the WTC.

  3. That place pisses me off. I have some guests in for a wedding 9/30. initially the rooms were to be 140 but when only a handful of rooms were left the price went up to over 300 and you HAD to book 2 nights in a row to get anything.

try days inn on 37th (or 38th?). i checked out a room there. they are adequate, small but clean. and about $140.
