From Newly Renovated to Needing Work: Four Houses to See This Weekend

Our open house picks on this last weekend of the first month of 2017 are all row houses, in varying states of repair. Two are newly and thoroughly renovated, one is in need of a complete overhaul and one is in between those poles, in need of some polishing and updating. They’re found in Bed Stuy, Park Slope, Crown Heights and Bushwick.

First up, a newly renovated 1870s Italianate brownstone in prime Bed Stuy, on MacDonough Street in the Stuyvesant Heights Historic District. It offers an owner’s triplex over a two-bedroom garden apartment, with a finished basement below and a roof deck above. The triplex has an open plan living space and four bedrooms, with the second floor taken up by a master suite including a walk-in closet, study, and white marble bath with a freestanding tub and separate shower. Features include radiant-heated oak floors, surround sound, central a/c and intercom communication between bedrooms.

The next one is interesting; on 8th Avenue in the Park Slope Extension Historic District, it’s one of a row of six “shopkeeper’s homes,” designed to hold a store on ground level with living space above, accessed via a back staircase. Built circa 1887 and, according to the listing, owned by the same family for the past 67 years, it’s currently set up with an apartment on each of its three levels, but could be refigured in several ways. Whether the owners reconfigures it or not they’ll have plenty of work to do: it needs “just about everything,” says the listing.

The next one, on Union Street in Crown Heights, has also been in the same family for decades — over 50 years, says the listing. This one’s a two-story barrel-front brownstone with a front porch, set up with a pair of floor-through apartments. Looks like it could use some polishing, and possibly some kitchen and bath updating as well. Original details include inlaid parquet floors, stained glass, a coffered ceiling, crown and other moldings and a pair of columns.

Last up is a flip on Aberdeen Street in Bushwick, on a cul-de-sac across from a playground and a block from the L train. It’s been gut renovated, with an owner’s duplex over a garden rental. The duplex has two or three bedrooms upstairs, depending on whether you count a windowless one (the listing does), including a master with an en suite marble bath and a walk-in closet. The downstairs is open plan, with a kitchen sporting a wine fridge, lacquered white cabinets and a marble-topped center island. There’s central air, and a new fence and wooden deck in the back yard.
