One of a row of attractive Neo-Grec brownstones in Bed Stuy has been recently renovated with preserved woodwork from its original 1880 construction. The circulars from the period advertised the row as “cabinet trimmed, finished in the most complete and workmanlike manner,” as well as “built in the most substantial manner and of the best material, with all improvements complete.”

The builder David Weild evidently made good on his words, judging by what is preserved of the home at 299 Monroe Street, with its window and door trim on the parlor level finished in fine style with fluted sides, corner blocks and bracketed and dentilled pediments. The incised stone mantels are well-preserved with good craftsmanship and tasteful details.

The new and improved version of this style has the two-family duplex over a garden-level rental advertised as “carefully imagined and crafted for modern living,” with central air, a decked terrace, German appliances, an Italian stove and a “clean and classic” Scandinavian design in its remade kitchens and bathrooms. The cabinets and bathroom vanity are oak with white marble countertops, which make a fine match with preserved details such as the pocket doors separating the front parlor from the rear. The refashioned kitchen is open to the dining area and has a blond wood and marble island in the middle and a new glass door to access the deck.

The two full-size bedrooms upstairs and a smaller office/bedroom all have closets, and there are two bathrooms upstairs but no powder room on the parlor level.

Photos in the listing show the rental unit has also been nicely finished in a similar manner, though with a pedestal sink in the bathroom and standard bathtub rather than the Scandinavian cabinet and glass shower panel upstairs. But it has a powder room through the kitchen. The listing is by Esther Patten and Yuval Vidal of Compass, asking $2.35 million. Not for the faint of heart, but will it get it?
