Astoria Park ski slope project cancelled, bummer

We learned of another victim of Hurricane Sandy – the proposed Astoria Park ski slope project that was on track for going up in the park this winter. It’s been cancelled because Astoria Park sustained too much damage after the hurricane. Nuts.

Blast from the warmer past – Fourth of July on Rockaway Beach, 1946

We were charmed by this photo of Rockaway Beach from the summer of 1946 – Fourth of July. So many people from a time that seems so far way. This was spotted on the Queens Museum of Art’s twitter feed, and they got the photo from Gothamist. Click to enlarge.

Jackson Heights most eclectic neighborhood in NYC?

The folks from Highbrow Magazine suggest this, but don’t outright call Jackson Heights the most eclectic of all NYC neighborhoods. JaxHeights does have a lot going for it – strong immigrant communities, including Colombians and South Asians; amazing food; beautiful historic architecture; and things like the Scrabble sign on the corner of 35th Ave and 81st Street.

Renters, here’s a brief guide for your intentions with LIC

Curbed put together a little guide called “A Renter’s Guide to the Rapidly Gentrifying Long Island City” that touches on elements like pricey/not pricey areas, rental prices, cultural institutions in the neighborhood, and a few listings. We were sorry they didn’t give us any of their restaurant recommendations, though.

LIC’s Alobar makes CBS News’ Best Thanksgiving Cocktails list

Alobar is making what sounds like a very tasty cocktail for the Thanksgiving season – it’s a Pumpkin Pie Martini, made with “brandy, Annisette, Frangelico, pumpkin puree and spiced syrup, topped with frothed cream and sprinkled with nutmeg.” CBS sure liked it and put it on one of their “bests” lists. Very nice, guys – we bet Clarence from It’s a Wonderful Life would drink that.
