The illustrious Chelsea Market, home to gourmet food-related businesses, like the Bowery Kitchen Supply, and mouth-watering restaurants like Friedman’s Lunch and Buddakan, is about to lose one of its most famous tenants to Long Island City (not that we’re complaining).

Beginning this month, Amy’s Bread is moving its baking operations to Long Island City, according to a notice on its Chelsea Market location. The decision is a result of growing volume and demand, which the Chelsea Market kitchen can no longer support. Instead, the ovens will be replaced with a 2,000 square-foot retail storefront with a baking demo kitchen where customers can see baking in action.

The Hell’s Kitchen store will also expand as a result of the move. The dessert kitchens will be replaced with an “Express” retail store for a quick breakfast, lunch or snack, with the hopes of easing the occasional long lines at the location.

Amy’s Bread will be the latest to move in to LIC’s “Flour District,” a collection of ex-Manhattanite bakeries that include Le Pain Quotidien, Eleni’s, and Pain D’Avignon, along with original neighborhood fixture Tom Cat. Amy Scherber also hopes to open a retail kiosk at the new Queens location. It’s an exciting development for LIC residents, and promises to make the neighborhood just a little sweeter.
