This Friday, all are invited to bring a mat and enjoy sunset yoga in Flushing Town Hall’s garden. Yumcha Yoga Studio teachers will lead a series of poses, followed by kirtan singing from the Indian bhakti devotional tradition. Inner peace will certainly be in the air, but the event will also informally kick off the Northern Boulevard venue’s summer activities program. This jam-packed schedule includes dance performances and concerts featuring R&B, Jazz, country, drumming, and African-based music. Details are on the jump page.

  • Yoga in the Garden: Friday, July 11th, 7 pm, $5 suggested donation.
  • Soul Party: Sunday, July 13, 2 pm, free. An R&B concert with a hit list that includes the likes of The Temptations, Marvin Gaye, and Johnnie Taylor performed by groove-heavy Soul Party. Dance lessons at 1 pm.
  • Young Dancemakers Company: Sunday, July 27th, 2 pm, free. Works by master choreographer Paul Taylor and YDC Music Director William Catanazaro. Dance lessons at 1 pm.
  • Monthly Jazz Jam: Wednesday, August 6th, 7 pm, $10, free for performers and students. Professional jazz musicians, graduate students studying jazz, and music educators meet new contacts, hone their chops, and jam with house band Queens Jazz OverGround.
  • Brian Clayton and The Green River Band: Sunday, August 10th, 2 pm, free. A blend of modern country music and pop rock. Dance lessons at 1 pm.

A drum circle under the August moon in the garden with master drummers Babloe Shankar and Abha Roy, who specializes in kathak, a classic northern Indian dance form. Fun begins with workshops on Indian tabla drums and other percussive instruments, followed by a jam with the entire group. Drums provided.
  • The Afri-Garifuna Jazz Ensemble: Sunday, August 24th, 2 pm, free. A high-energy group that mixes African, Latin and Jazz with indigenous rhythms from Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.
