Yesterday a reader sent in the photo above of the house on Bergen between Bond and Nevins that was charred to a crisp on Saturday night. The address is 223 Bergen, as DOB records note that there’s a full vacate order on 225 Bergen “due to fire at 223 Bergen.” City records also say that the house’s other neighbor, 221, was damaged because of firefighting efforts. Anyhow, the reader who sent in the photo said she saw one of the neighboring buildings being cleared out yesterday. The couple of stories published about the fire do not indicate that there were any deaths. Click through for a Google streetview photo of 223 in better times. GMAP DOB
Sad all around. It’s amazing, though, to see that one building totally charred up and its neighbors looking completely untouched. I always assume if one building on my side of the block goes up in flames we’re all going down.
I live on this block and saw the fire that night. It accelerated very quickly. No one was injured, fortunately, but, yes, the interior is destroyed. Sadly the neighbors at 221 Bergen had some damage to the walls on the top floor when FDNY had to break through to help put out the fire. I’m not sure whether anyone from 225 Bergen has even been home yet.
That house is directly across the street from mine! I’m looking at it as I write this. Oddly, I never knew there had been a fire there.
