The Times got to the bottom of the President Street anchor mystery this weekend. Turns out the anchor was found three miles off Cape May, New Jersey in 1968 and a guy named Charles Burkett who lived at 874 President Street paid to have it moved to his front yard. The anchors construction pre-dates modern welding techniques, which explains its 2,150-pound weight which in turns may explain part of the reason why it’s never been moved. That and the fact that everyone in the neighborhood seems to have formed a sentimental attachment to the relic.
