The William Ulmer Brewery Complex, a group of four 19th-century buildings in Bushwick, was granted landmark status yesterday at the weekly meeting of the Landmarks Preservation Commission. The Ulmer Brewery, the four parts of which were constructed in the German round-arch style betwen 1872 and 1890, was one of 45 breweries based in Brooklyn by the 1890s; at its peak it produced 3.2 million gallons of beer a year. The two-story office building, above, was designed by Theobald Engelhardt in the Romanesque Revival style and is considered the gem of the complex. “If it’s the first brewery in the city of New York to become a landmark, it’s appropriate that it’s in Brooklyn,” said Frederick Bland, a member of the LPC board. “This is an extraordinary building,”

  1. I love this building, too. The interior is very cool, too. I’m glad the entire complex was landmarked. There are so few left, and they represent a huge Brooklyn industry that employed a lot of people, who in turn, helped build our borough in many ways. Congrats to the people who worked so hard to get the complex landmarked. It’s been calendared for quite a while. Yea!

Incredible building. What’s in it now??? Take down those wondow bars and that razor wire.

    from the NYT article:

The two-story Romanesque Revival red-brick office building (easily identifiable by the word “Office” chiseled into the facade) is home to a furniture designer named Zeb Stewart who, in a neat piece of symmetry, is also a co-owner of two bars in Williamsburg. “It feels great,” Mr. Stewart said upon being told the news. “It’s a beautiful house.”
