conversion to mini-split heat pump system
Hi All, we have a multifamily house currently heated with steam and cooled with window or thru-wall units. Looking to convert to a heat pump mini-split style system for heating and cooling. Does anyone have a recommendation for a HVAC company for consultation and installation? Also love to hear about any pitfalls etc. from homeowners who might have made a similar change. Thanks!

We have a heat pump system that functions as both A/C and heat, but traditional air-handler, not minisplit. It works quite well down to about 35 degrees. Below that, we do get the occasional “defrost” cycle, which sucks ass. We have pretty, old radiators and a gas boiler, which we left it. I rigged up the communicating stats that control the heat pump so that the “aux heat” call goes to an isolation relay, and that relay goes to the boiler. WHen the temp gets really low, the boiler gets activated. We typically don’t have much in the way of boiler use outside of Dec-Feb, and overall it has saved us a decent amount of money.

We installed mini-splits primarily to cool the house and tried using them for heating in the beginning of the heating system. Somehow with the blowing air, I never really felt warm. Our old house felt drafty and chilly. As soon as I turned the steam back on, the house felt warm and comfortable.

And by that I mean the photoelectric arrays your are installing on your house. Cause the solar system is pretty damn big.

Did you ask them to consider your increased electricity need when you sized the solar system?

We’re planning on doing this in the coming months, and hope we don’t regret it. We’re definitely not a passivhaus. However, we’re also getting solar installed, and hoping that helps to offset the potentially massive winter bills. Any insights from any that switched to all electric AND solar?

to what the others are saying and to add something that i read on here, perhaps stated by dork, “heat pumps do not give that blast of heat radiators do”. that statement is so true and so important, especially when compared to a heat pump. i lived in NC during college and having little money, i turned the heat (heat pump) off when i was not around (i think i set it at 50 and i put it that low at night as well). but then when i wanted heat, i moved it to 68. i was always cold and could never warm my apt up and thought that was the way life was until i moved back to NY and here in the freezing north, all was good. then, it got explained here: “these things heat slowly over time”. the way it was presented was sort of like this: the room needs to be warm and kept warm to stay warm. no coming home like i still do and turning the steam system on and having a warm house in an hour or so. does not work (or it did not work with 1980’s technology).
and in case anyone is wondering how people can live like this – with the heat OFF on the over night and OFF most of the day, even now, we have gotten so used to it that if i even turn the heat on and push the thermostat to 68 both my better half and my son begin calling me “old” and other things and demand i turn it off and put a sweater on. when this happens, i usually turn a radiant heater on. the heating bills are low here (even with the radiant heater because we only heat that space, not the entire house). the bills to heat this house run a little over half of what the previous owner spent (i requested a print out of their oil deliveries from the oil company).
down south i was told the heat pumps only really work in the warmer weather anyway and once it got real cold, those 1980’s models had an electric coil inside them and when that came on the electric meter spun like a fan. not sure if technology has changed.

I second Cate. The idea of ditching boilers is highly appealing – but unfortunately the heat pumps can’t quite cut it here. You might get by with near-passivhaus numbers or better to truly be comfortable in the dead of winter. You could still install the heat pump version and use it in the shoulder seasons, depending on the incremental cost of the unit. It might save some life on your boiler, deploying it for 3 months (give or take), which is a bonus.

Consider keeping your steam system and adding mini-splits for cooling. Also, personally, I find radiator heat to be more comfortable than forced air.

I used RichAir for my mini splits and they were excellent. The units cool quickly, efficiently, and silently. That said, I would never rely solely on the mini-split heat pumps for heat in the Northeast in a typical home. In a passive haus, yes, but not a regular brownstone.

As eman says you could do a rough calculation without getting too technical.

Air Tactical Hvac seems to have good reviews but I would still recommend getting multiple bids.
eman is unique and not all people do calculations. Some of them wing it. You’ll have to vet people which is time consuming but the best way.

I could do it as well but am totally booked up for at least 2 weeks

any decent hvac or heating contractor can do it for you…also endless stuff available on the internet

Where would one go to get a heat loss analysis?

Just make sure that you get a heat loss analysis on your envelope as well as a heat load analysis of your current steam system… the quality of heat generated by a heat pump is way different than steam heat. At extreme cold temperatures many of my clients find heat pumps uncomfortable, even with fairly tight building envelopes The systems that I work with generally have a hot water heat component that kicks in at around 40-45 degrees to maintain comfort and economy. While heat pumps can be effective at lower temps, the electric cost can be prohibitively high at low temps
