Our staircase from parlor to top floor has settled over the years and now one side sits at least 3-4 inches lower than the other (due to sagging floor joyces). Structurally, we believe the stair to be sound, but cosmetically, it looks awful and gives you a falling sensation when you walk up or down the stairs. We don’t like it, and want to address it. Our contractor and architect outlined for us some options: 1) replace the stairs (no way!) or 2) shim each tread – to do so, remove the bannister and spindles then put them back in place when finished (cost = $7-10K on time and materials). It’s expensive, and we’re not sure it will fix the whole problem. We are also afraid it will ruin the bannister\/spindles. Has anyone done this? Has anyone done something else you’d recommend? Would you trust this job to your gut renov contractor, or does it require a specialist like SoxCo? And, since we don’t really have the budget for it now, is this something one could opt to do later, after living in the house for awhile?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
