Stairs

Hi, there are missing balusters in staircase in our 100 year old townhouse. 8 balusters are missing. Please recommend staircase stores or carpenter that can make and install balusters. Very simple design. How much is the cost per piece? Thank you in advance!

Hi,
Can anyone point me in the direction of easy-to-understand requirements for a staircase leading from a first floor apartment to a basement rec room. We live on the first floor of a 4-family building and incorporated the basement into our apartment as a recreational area. In addition to the flight of stairs from the first floor to the basement, one can also exit the basement through a sliding door into the backyard, and through a door at the front that exits to the sidewalk. Primarily I’m trying to figure out if the staircase has to be enclosed (I take this to be walled-in) or can have ballusters, if a door is required at the top or bottom of the stairs (I came across something in the code that seemed to imply this), and required dimensions (stair width, tread height, etc.). Thanks in advance – the DOB doesn’t make it easy to figure this stuff out!

We had our front redone a few years ago before I took over managing the property and the work was not done well. The brownstone on the stairs crumbles off every 6 months or so, I’m always repairing and not very good at it! Does anyone have a company to recommend to re-brownstone the stairs, and/or an estimated cost for this project?

We would like to drop a staircase down from our parlour floor to the garden apartment (currently no access). Can someone point me to the relevant code? This is a two-family brownstone, currently triplex / simplex. Any advice or shared wisdom is also appreciated.

Hey Stoners!

I have a newborn who is ready to explore the apartment on his knees. I’m looking to carpet a few flights of stairs and would appreciate any advice you guys can provide in terms of carpeting companies, prices, customer service, etc.

Any words of assistance would be very much appreciated.

Thanks.

Hi!
We have 10 unused metal stair treads for sale–super strong, industrial, non-slip style. Contractor purchased the wrong ones.
They are 4’Long x 9+1/2″W x 1+1/2″ H
Pick up in Brooklyn.
Asking 150 for the ten of them.
Let me know if you’re interested or have questions –and I can send additional photos….

We own a one family in Cobble Hill and have just opened the stairs down to the garden apartment. I am trying to find some spindles that match the other stairs, along with a handrail and newel post. I would love for them to match and am not interested in finding something from Home Depot/Lowe’s. We are new to the area–does anyone have any suggestions on a good architectural salvage spot in the area that might have something for us–anyone have anything in their basement? It’s probably 12-15 spindles (that can be painted) and a small newel post. Thank you in advance…

Hoping that someone out there has 2-3 staircase spindles similar to the one shown that they’d be interested in selling as we’re missing a few.
If you have anything similar you can contact me at orr.susan@gmail.com
Thanks

I’m having a stoop in front of a frame house in the South Slope rebuilt and the contractor has recommended trying bluestone steps. All of the houses in the area have either limestone or concrete steps. Does anyone know of houses around that have bluestone steps so that I can get a feel for the appearance? Opinions on bluestone steps in general?
