I just looked at an apartment that MAY be a good deal on the border of Crown/Prospect Heights. It’s a condo building that’s been gut renovated, BUT — I looked in the laundry closet on the top floor and saw MOLD on the ceiling. Is this a deal-killer? How do I make sure it hasn’t spread and that it isn’t dangerous? I’ve heard that mold “experts” may over-sell the idea that mold will make you ill.

We are looking to get a good outdoor space, but unfortunately what would have been our backyard was sacrificed to a property around the corner many years ago. We are looking at a green roof, possibly with a partial roof deck and solar panels. Anyone have any experience getting this done in Brooklyn? We’ve spoken with deck builders, but are looking to tie it in with the other aspects of a green roof as seamlessly as possible.

Does anyone have any thought on getting an aluminum cellar door – instead of a steel one? This would be for my backyard – where it would be nice to have a light door to open and close for easy access to the cellar. Does anyone know anyone who installs aluminum cellar doors?

We have asbestos insulation in our brownstone. We got a quote to remove it that seemed too expensive. Is there someone locally who does this type of work. It is just in our cellar. My guess is just one days work.

My husband and I are going into contract on a beautiful brownstone in Bed-Stuy and we just got the dissapointing (but somewhat expected) report that the place has both lead paint and asbestos. I am looking for any advice, comments, and price estimates on dealing with this. Money is an issue, but it is very important to us that we deal with this in a safe way as I am pregnant.

Does anyone have good advice or experience with the process of checking and treating for asbestos in the basement? To my inexpert eye, the crumbling old insulation around my basement pipes does not look good. I’d like to get an expert in to look. I have heard that you can get asbestos material sealed as opposed to removed, and this is actually safer because it does not release particles into the air. Anyone got experiences, recommendations for an expert and/or idea for how much this can cost?
