Hello. Can anyone recommend the best/proper way to paint a stone window lintel and sill on a typical brick row house? Should I use a masonry primer or can I use a regular exterior primer and paint? Thank you very much.

  1. Don’t paint it.

Stone is a porous material, and painting it will not help whatever ails it.

  2. What is the reason behind painting the sills and lintels? If it’s leak related or stone deterioration related, painting is going to make the situation worse. If it’s general soiling, the stone can be cleaned.

  3. Wet the brush with water, and then carefully paint the water onto the stone. It will give you the natural beauty of the stone.
