My neighbor has a above ground pool that hasn’t been cleaned in a few years. Its in severe disrpair, rain water totally black. We have mentioned the mosquito problem (to them)for the past few summers. The surrounding neighbors have also asked what their plans for the pool are. Tried calling 311, no help. Money isn’t the issue. Any advise?

  1. we had the same problem with an uncaring neighbor a few years back. They had left a kiddie pool out for their dogs and after a few weeks, it was a breeding ground. This is what I did: I called the local reptile pet store and had them order some brown rats (not white ones nor black ones, brown ones. they can get them in any color for feeding picky snakes). I had them clonk the rats over the head and tossed one in the pool. The pool was gone the next day. I would say if your neighbor does not respond to that, call the health dept and report the dead rat in the pool. Bloomberg will send a swat team out.

  2. Sorry Arkady, I was writing, you beat me to the punch. That’s one of the things I hate about the Forum is the inability to remove or edit posts.

  3. Obviously getting them to knock it down or fix the situation once and for all is best.

In a pinch can you get a gallon of Clorox in there?

Clorox is cheap, and should treat the standing water for the time being.

  4. If you can toss things into it, I’d get Mosquito Dunks from Lowe’s or Home Depot & hurl 3 or 4 into it every month during the hot weather. They’re little doughnut-shaped discs that weigh about an ounce & are about 2 inches in diameter. Half a dozen cost about $12.
