This is my honey locust tree, last spring. For some unknown reason, it seems to have up and died this year. I don’t understand it. If it is dead, I need to have it cut down. It is much taller than my house, so this is going to be a job for experts.
Unfortunately, I am not made of money. I need someone who will come out and give a free estimate, and a fair price. Any recommendations? Thanks!
Honey Locusts (I think)up on the hill in FG Park are also looking pretty crappy this year. Not totally dead, but with many empty branches. I wonder if it isn’t a mold or a parasite.
You might want to give it a little more time. Locust trees in general take a lot longer to bud in the spring time than other trees. They are some of the last trees to bud. If it hasn’t already been said, and you are on a budget, I would wait until late June before you decide to do anything with it. The weather has been cooler, and it might need some extra time to come around- especially if it was fine last year.
Honey Locust is what the city planted in front of our apartment. I was going to plant the ivy around the trees as to avoid litter blowing into the pits, but I didn’t think of it growing up the tree, guess I need a better idea.
the ivy will definately kill a tree….if you don’t want to spend as much on it have it cut down to 12 ft or whatever size can’t fall on your hhouse…..it will be cheaper and the ivy covered stump will look like an evergreen and provide some privacy
The vine is ivy. It’s been growing on the tree trunks since I’ve been here. (2000) I had no idea it could be strangling the tree, which has been blossoming and having a full canopy of leaves every year. I’m quite upset about that. The ivy on the house is no longer there, btw. The problems with that, I knew about, but the trees, no. Wow.
and by the way, it’s terrible for your facade too.
I second Arkady’s suggestion about Cornell. They were very informative when my dogwood died 3 years ago.
It’s the vine.
Is it ivy or bittersweet? (bittersweet has a very distinctive red root). Bittersweet is very invasive. Strangles trees. Drive up the taconic or anywhere in westchester and you see tree after tree after tree covered with it and dying. It’s very sad.
Thanks all. I’ll make some phone calls.
