Is this crazy? Has anyone out there had problems with theft of rooftop units? Has anyone put condensing units in the backyard because of fear of rooftop theft?
Thanks for your help! I’d much prefer to keep it on the roof, but not if theft is a potential issue!
I think it depends on where your property is. We have rooftop ac’s throughout the City and have experienced frequent cannibalization of wiring and metal pieces. Nothing stolen has much street value but it has cost us quite a bit of money to get the units up and running again. At certain properties – most low extensions to buildings, we now install the units in cages.
I have central ac in my house and the units on the roof are huge and couldn’t possibly be stolen. I would look for a different contractor or at least get a second opinion. Good luck
Definitely go with the roof but I would suggest you ask him again if his reason is stealing the equipment, it just doesn’t sound right. Good Luck!
I think your contractor is looking for the easier way out- in terms of installation. Go with the roof.
I have had one in the yard & one on the roof for 18 years & neither has been vandalized. I’ve never heard of its being done, either.
It is more about stripping out copper and the likes. Build a cage if necessary.
huh? in this nabe? yes sometimes the electric lines are stolen for the cooper…but not generally here….probably someone from Staten Island
That is crazy unless it’s a big apt building. They’re not valuable enuf. How would they get them off they roof anyway? Easier to steal them out of the back yard if it came to that.
