Hi everyone. My 5 yr old son and I just moved to Stuy Heights Bedstuy (A train Utica stop). Right now he is in a private school in the East Village. I work in the West Village. We have applied to a few schools in Manhattan and are still waiting to hear if we made it in.( I am pretty sure that we did not though )Basically, I am wondering where your kids go to school if you live in the area? A “good” school is really important to me. any advice would be great?! thanx!

  1. I think the OP is asking what is in the area. Isn’t there a private school in Bed Stuy called Bed Stuy Prep or something? Plus aren’t there good public schools in Clinton Hill and Williamsburg? I wouldn’t know but maybe someone else on here does.

  2. Empower Charter School is near you, on Rochester and Park Avenue. There’s a waitlist, but it’d be worth it to add your child’s name. Great school.

    Good luck.

  3. You may already know this but the progressive schools in the East Village are unzoned and there are many Brooklyn families enrolled (Neighborhood, Earth, Children’s Workshop and East Village Community School).

  4. Arkady — what’s down with Packer? My kids are not there, but I was impressed with it when we toured.

OP — I assume you don’t like the local zoned school. Leadership Prep Charter school (over on Macon) has gotten some decent press, but I assume that like the private schools, charter schools are also at the waitlist stage.

  5. oh forgot, how about claremont in the fin district. relatively close to the fulton stop and you can get trains to commute to work in the west village

  6. i’m a bit confused by the post. you moved but didn’t figure out the schools beforehand? can you just keep him in his current school ? (figure it’s difficult in terms of communte). the k application process for privates in brooklyn is the same as in manhattan. if this is for this sep, you are probably out of luck. packer, st ann, brooklyn friends, berkley carroll, poly prep are the big privates in brooklyn but just as competitive to get in as the manhattan schools. you migh have better luck next year for 1st grade, while not an entry year, you also don’t have to deal with all the application process etc
