Hi all,

We’re considering installing a steel deck off the back of our parlor floor. The ironworkers (Lopopolo, a rec. from these forums) will “supply a tracking number” but we would be responsible for permits and the permit fee.

Given what I’ve read here, I have a healthy fear of the Brooklyn DOB! Does anyone have thoughts regarding hiring an expediter to manage deck permits? Would the expediters handle everything (other than the metalworking, obviously), or would we need a separate engineer to do drawings? Or should we just bite the bullet and try to do this ourselves?

  1. we went with Sebastian at D’alessandro and associates, shopped around, no headaches, got it done quickly and at a very fair price. Very knowledgeable with the DOB, highly recommend Sebastian D’Alessandro Architects and Lopopolo Ironworks. Good Luck! 🙂 U can tell them Grace recommended them.

  2. Do not try to do this by yourself. No way. Go to an architect/engineer and get it approved. Only then doesyour tracking number come into the picture.

  3. Scott Schnall and the Lopopolo’s know of one another.

The Lopopolo’s did a deck job for some of my clients that was part of a larger Alt 2 filed by another architect/expediter not very savvy regarding the DOB, so I ended up calling Scott to ensure they were in the clear permit wise.

P.S. My expediter (not an architect – a filing rep)just informed me also that there is now same day approval for Alt 2 projects.

  4. We put in a deck last year and used scott schnall. You can search for him on this site. It was worth the money. He sent someone to our house, we told him what we wanted and he drew it up and got it approved. It is not an easy process getting a permit, I would recommend using him.
