Will be renovating triplex in brownstone. It currently has forced air (heating), but I’ll be switching to baseboards. Don’t know whether to use the vents already there–or, just use slim jims? Also, has anyone ever used the Unico system? Thanks all.

  1. Your old heating vents are more than likely close to floor level. Hot air rises while cold air drops. That’s why A/C vents are high up. My advise is to go with a high velocity system. Unico is a good brand but way overpriced. Go with Spacepak or Peerless Pavillion. Sheet rock over the old vents and get rid of the old duct work too. Also since your renovating if your budget allows, look into high efficiancy boiler and radiant heat. You won’t be sorry. And hire one of the great heating contractors that contribute to this forum.

  2. From what I’ve been told, the original brownstone duct work in not efficient in distributing cooled air. They are too low to the ground. The cold heavier air would tend to pool nearer to the floor, leaving the areas above warmer. I guess you could run fans to even out the distribution of the colder air. Not regarding cost, there are better ways of cooling a brownstone then that.
