I would like to have a sidewalk sale in front of my Brooklyn Heights apartment building. This is city property and, according to 311, I need a permit. Anyone have any suggestions?

  1. That’s one thing I miss about living in brownstones – whether rented or owned – having stoop sales. Easiest way to get rid of stuff – people pay you to carry your junk away for you – all you have to do is drag it down the stairs!

Wouldn’t dream of asking large apartment building to let me do one – would look strange. Always thought I should get together and have one with a friend in a walkup – though I’d have to drag my stuff further. Now it goes craigslist, or donated.

Had no idea it required a permit. I’d risk forgoing a permit, if it was small and easily moved if someone had a problem. But I wouldn’t skip clearing it with your building. They might have issues. Is there a ticket for violation? Who gets it – the building or you? I’d look into getting your building to do one big one together, and look into what’s involved in getting a permit (unless the building agrees to take the risk of the cost of violation.)

  2. I would clear it with the management of the apartment building. If it were my own house I’d just do it. Just don’t block the sidewalk for all those old people and their walkers!!! 🙂
