Hello,
My husband and I will be embarking upon a brownstone renovation (sort of mid-range, not a gut job), and would love recommendations for the following types of tradespeople – we live in Bed-Stuy, so anyone local would be an added bonus!
Floor refinisher
General carpenter for repairing walls and ceilings, and skim-coating
Plumber
Mason
Roofer
Asbestos remover securing or removal for a very small area
As far as the Asbestos guy..haha, make sure he’s licensed!!
The lawyers are on a rampage.
Please be aware that if you are replacing your boiler you must also hire a licensed plumber.
Be sure that you check licenses, paperwork, and do an extra check to see if the contractor is certified with the manufacturers they are installing.
Licensed plumbers know the code, attend classes, and can give you all the necessary rebates. Spending a little now will go a long way in the future. Especially when you might need to find them for any reason.
Primer06, Yes I am…My Comany is at http://www.aladdinplumbingcorp.com…Contact information on the site to discuss pricing and estimates.
Brooklyn Plumber,
Are you licensed? Do you work in Manhattan? How much do you charge for a full gut bathroom? All branch lines back to the riser, new tub, new showerbody, sink, toilet and faucet?
“The licensed guys were a joke” I cut and pasted that from your comment.
“Unlicensed people are often just as skilled, they’re just not especially businessy.”
Thats yours too right?
Anything project over $200.00 requires a licensed contractor. Sounds threatening? to Whom? The only person that could get in trouble is the person doing the work, not the client.
I have to correct my previous statement that Jose charged us $1.50 per square foot — it might have been as much as $2 a square foot, depends on how you calculate it. Anyway, that’s reasonable for sealing and stain, four coats, and hand sanding the stairs.
I’m not getting involved in what seems to be a heated conversation….I still haven’t seen many legitimate recommendations as the original poster had requested, just a lot of banter. Wholesaler, Primer and Mopar, thanks for backing the licensed companies!!
hey Primer06, maybe you should reread my post. I didn’t say that licensed people are a joke.
And what are YOU suggesting when you write that work over $200 is unlawful? That sounds more threatening than informative. Nothing “unlawful” has happened. This forum is for people to offer their opinions/experiences on their renovations and to make recommendations for those doing good work, which is all I have done here.
The cosumer afair say’s hire/use licensed contractor because they have at least knowledge of safety rules and regulations. Most of the licensed contractor must have to carry insurance to keep the license. All of rules and regulation and insurance is to secure people who work on job site, public safty, home owner’s property safety.Anyone who hire person does not have licensed and insurance means there is no warranty about quality of work, someguy left without finish the work, never pick up phone if you have any complain after finish the job.anything happen any accident comes to property owners insurance. For roofing and mason work you may call M.Hamid Construction co.at 718-633-1500.Special Rigger licensed contractor with insuranced.Reffarence available.
