Does anyone know if the NYC building and fire dept codes allow a gas fireplace to be installed in a bedroom? I’ve heard different things but can’t seem to find out for certain.

  1. Yes and No..it depends on the type of fire and the size of the bedroom.
A ventless gas fire is not allowed in a bedroom or a bathroom. An open burning gas fire may or may not be allowed, based on the square footage of the room and the btu’s of the unit. The logic is that an open burning fire pulls it’s combustion air from the home. In the case of a bedroom or bathroom, typically these are rooms in which, once occupied, the door is closed for privacy. That being the case, the combustion air is now restricted to only being taken from that room, instead of the larger house area. If there isn’t enough combustion air for the fire in that room, it can cause issues.
There are exceptions to this rule based on a the btu’s of the fire and the square footage of the room. A list of the exceptions can be found here:

A direct vent unit, like another poster mentioned, is what inspectors prefer for bedrooms. A direct vent pulls it’s combustion air from outside thru one pipe and exhaust fumes and moisture vapor out a seond pipe. They do have sealed glass ( or neoprene ceramic material that looks like glass ) fronts, which keep the “engine” from pulling air from the room.
-Hope this helps explain things a bit better-

  2. i had a brownstone that had a gas fireplace in the master. it was already there, didn’t install it, but was in the chimney line. worked great. no issues.

  3. Dave,

    It was an Empire (www.fireplacesandmantels.com)

I think it was the 33″ wide unit. You would need the “install kit”, which comes in two lengths 20′ and 35′.

The install kit gets you two heavy flexible tubes, and a top cap which keeps the in and out apart.

I can’t easily imagine another way out of the house from inside a fireplace other than going up a flue, but technically it can be vented out a wall (in the suburbs?)

And of course you need a gas cock in the fire box. There is about two inches in the base where a stainless flexible feed is attached (1/2″).

The fan motor has a 6′ cord, we just ran it out the base to a receptacle.

The disconcerting thing is the fan runs on a thermocouple, so it doesn’t come on until the unit cooks up. But then it runs after you shut the gas.

Gas fireplace in bedroom is fine, direct vent or standard vent thru roof. Sex with voodoo master and dozens of candles to be avoided.

  5. We recently installed a direct vent unit, and the outside does not get hot.

To elaborate, a direct vent is similar to the high efficiency Baxi type boilers that need a 2″ line for fresh air in, and a 2″ line for exhaust out. They do have concentric vents that have one inside the other.

But to be clear, those lines can utilize a flue to access the outside, but they do not use the flue to draft.

Most of the heat is obtained when the 110AC fan blows room air between the inner hot box and the outer sleeve.

The one we installed does 33,000 BTU’s, and that is a lot of heat. Enough to toast a large room onthe coldest day.

The height of the flame is adjustable, and there is a rheostat on the fan, to throttle the heat output down. On more than half fan speed, you do hear it fairly clearly, I judged it to be too loud above half.

I wouldn’t want to hold my hand directly on the glass, but other posters concerns about flammables is unwarranted. The exterior of the unit gets no hotter than a radiator.

I suppose that the size of the firebox would restrict the size of the model you can use, but that’s OK in that even a smaller unit will be capable of putting out more heat than you can stand.

  6. DIBS,
you would be surprised at the amount of people that DO NOT have common sense.

    here is an example:

A woman paid a man 300 dollars to perform a voo-doo ceremony to bring her good luck, he placed candles all around the bed, (you see where I am going with this)??…they proceeded to have sex, and in the heat of passion one of the candles fell over and caught the bed lines on fire….

they tried to put it out, it didn’t go out, so they opened a window and the apartment door. (real smart) In minutes the whole entire building was engulfed in flames, about 74 tenants lost their home, and why???? because some idiot DID NOT HAVE COMMON SENSE….

see this all on you tube, “flatbush fire”….Avenue D

and now people wonder why i have an objection to a fire place in the bedroom……………there are a lot of dumb ass people in this world.
