We need to have our floors sanded (they’re a mess) but don’t know how to deal w/the furniture. We’re in a 4th floor, walk-up & wd prefer not to have to move everything out.
Suggestions?

  1. Yeah, easier to do 1/2 the place, then the other half, than to move stuff up or down stairs or building shelves – that’s just too much work. Obviously, stuff whatever you can in the rooms with floors not being redone, store selected items that are easy to move elsewhere if necessary.

If you have a tiny place, studio or one-bedroom with a really small bedroom, then you may have to resort to options suggested above.

  2. My guys did a great job dealing with the furniture. yes, you pay a bit extra because they are there a day or two more but it wasn’t an issue for them

  3. Move it all into one room; when the other rooms are finished move it all back, plus the contents of the last room and have that room done. A PITA but better than putting everything into storage.

  4. Jamb as much as you can, especially the heavy stuff, into the bathroom and kitchen, if it has a non-wood floor. Stack it high and cover it with plastic, sealing it up.

If you are handy and have any narrow spaces — 6′-10′ wide — construct a temporary wall-supported shelf that spans the space. Picture a bed-loft you see in some small apartments. You can do this with a few 2x4s or 2x6s, you won’t really need plywood since it is temporary. Put your mattress on it and then load it up, being careful not to overload. Cover and seal with plastic sheeting. Make sure it has 4′ min, preferably 5’+ clear under so the sanding machine will fit. Make sure it is supported by the wall studs and that they can bear the load. Otherwise, support it using wood legs and then finish their footprints after the rest of the project is complete.

Get the neighbors on your floor or the one just up or down from you to let you store some things in their apartment. Make it worth their while.

The floor could be done part at at time for the sanding, moving a few things for each pass but that would be a pain. And it would be an even bigger problem for the finishing phase since you will want at least two coats and must wait 6-8 hours between coats and much longer before any furniture can be placed on it.

    Good luck.
