i’ll be planting a 3 tree Euro Birch stand above ground on a SW facing deck in Greenpoint, soon. any tips for this? i will also include a few low shrubs in this container, as well, for root cooling coverage. i have about 4 + feet of depth that is possible. anyway, any shared experience would be great.

  1. you realize the trees are 30- 40+ trees That are fairly fast growers. You might want to reconsider your choice of 3 trees in a small Brooklyn lot. And the water issue is a big problem and birches are susceptible to branches breaking.

  2. Your biggest problem is going to be watering. Birches are notorious water lovers (that’s why you often see them along river banks). Add to that the south west facing deck which means you’ll probably get a decent amount of sun. I asume the deck isn’t that high off the ground? (above three stories and you have to start worrying about wind dehydration). With that in mind, you might want to consider putting in some kind of drip irrigation system if you can. If you don’t install an irrigation system of some type, you’re going to want to have someone come in and water any time you’re going to be gone for more than a few days. Other than the watering issues, birches are pretty forgiving and beautiful trees.
Oh yeah, they are also host trees to the Asian Long Horned Beatle, so you might get a knock on your door from the NYS Dept. of Agriculture wanting to inspect them once in a while, but I still think they’re worth planting.
