Who to Tip???
I have never tipped an electrician, plumber or locksmith and most people I know wouldn’t either. But- what about my painter- a person who submitted a bid for the job- should that person be tipped? If so how much? What about a development’s contractor doing punch list work?

I tip delivery people. I would tip movers. Food and other stuff. Not UPS. I tip cleaning people. I tip cab drivers.
I tip waiters.
That’s about it. Regarding tradespeople (electricians, plumbers, handymen, locksmiths, etc), business owners, vendors….I don’t tip. In fact, if these people are professionals, they don’t expect it and would most likely be p’o’d. (I also don’t tip Starbucks people or any people behind a counter whose service usually is limited to ringing up the cash register and putting my stuff in a bag).
I always offer tips unless the service is horrible. The size of the tip reflects how much the person went out of their way to provide excellent service. Sometimes people refuse the tips and say “thanks, but unnecessary.” The boiler in our rental broke six times this year and the service was excellent every single time. We offered tips and they always refused. I wish our landlord would have been as great as the boiler guys. I even tip owners of small businesses – sometimes they refuse and other times they accept – the salon I go to is brand new and I know my tip makes a difference to the owner who cuts my hair. What I have found is that if you tip respectfully, the service continues to be outstanding.
I tip locksmiths, plumbers and electricians when they have to go out of their way for me. Emergency calls, rush jobs and the like, but not a regular job. I guess it’s the difference between “can you come out next week and install a sink” and “my sink just fell off the wall and is spewing water everywhere”. OK, I do know to turn off the water, but you get the point.
I never tip my plumber. Or contractors in general. Unless they do something miraculous that saves me a ton of money.
Oh, jeez. Really? Last time I had a plumber here (one of your guys, Master Plvumber–and he was great), I wondered to myself if I should tip him… So how many of you tip your plumbers and electricians??
Wow, I tip all workers, owner or not. No wonder I’m broke!
My plumbers make a ton of money in tips. For better or for worse, most people tip them for service calls.
If it’s the Owner of the Company doing the work, a tip really isn’t necessary. If he or she is working with a helper or a crew, or the crew is there alone, and they really go out of their way for your home, a tip would be nice for the extra efforts. A small token can go a long way. They will remember it next time. If you offer it to the Owner, I’m sure they would be classy and give it to the workers!!
No.
