When it comes to removing asbestos no one seems to be reasonable. I’d say that many old flat roofs on brownstones have asbestos and most are removed and discarded with no care for asbestos. Not saying that’s the right way to do things but…
Many old roofs have asbestos, in the roofing material and in the roofing cement.

Contact KAM Labs in LIC,Queens. For about $20 they will test a sample of the material you have concerns about.

We ran into on a recent addition. We used Rona Maintenance Inc. (917) 609-4869. They did it quickly and for a reasonable price.
Minard – The roof on my boyfriend’s place on 11th St. had asbestos under 2 or 3 layers of tarpaper.

In any case, you need a certified abatement contractor to remove all the material and properly bag it and dispose of it. I have never heard of asbestos in a roof, but back in the 50’s and 60’s they thought it was a miracle material and they used it everywhere.
