I was wondering if anyone had any idea about how much I should expect to spend on painters for a 1000sf apartment. It would need to have years of awful paint stripped first but would be empty when the work was being done. Just trying to figure out about how much I would need to put aside to have the work done! Any advice welcome. thanks!

  1. If the apt needs minimal prep, about $1 to $2 per square foot.

As for stripping, that is a specialized activity not handled by painters. It is also very slow and very expensive. You’re sure you want stripping and not some other type of wood prep?

  2. Hello,

First of all, I recommend that the painted surfaces get tested for lead content since u mentioned that its many layers, it could be lead based. Some surfaces/ substrates cannot be stripped completely and would be least expensive to have it removed or encapsulated. If it turns out to be lead based then I strongly recommend that you hire a company and individuals that are trained and EPA certify in lead based paint abatement. Upon completion of the abatement (if lead based paint is present) you would need to have clearance or post abatement samples taken to make sure that the abatement was successful and that the place is suitable for occupancy (lead hazard/ dust free). Lead based paint dust is very hazardous to kids and adults as well. Feel free to contact us with any questions.
