Hi, there are missing balusters in staircase in our 100 year old townhouse. 8 balusters are missing. Please recommend staircase stores or carpenter that can make and install balusters. Very simple design. How much is the cost per piece? Thank you in advance!

  1. Bill from Circular Stairs did our spindles. He was so good, we had him replace the stairs too. He’s on Broadway near the Bed Stuy/Bushwick border. You’ll find his # on a forum search.

  2. A customer of mine recently posted a picture of the late 1880’s walnut balusters she needed here, on this forum. Someone saw it and contacted her from the midwest and sold her exact matches for a very low price – like $10 each.

Dykes was able to get the same style, with a lot of detail made for $80.

Also, Adriatic Wood products makes these.

  3. Also Heights Woodworking does it & much cheaper I believe. To some extent it depends on whether the missing ones are on a floor level or on a stair (much easier to replace.)

  4. We recently went through this with a more complicated profile. We needed to replace only three. The contractor who redid our hallways used A Tamer at 465 Baltic (718) 522-6427. They made a perfect match – very nice work. Our contractor charged us almost $100 per balluster, which included install.

Since you describe the design of your balluster as very simple, you may be able to find stock pieces for much cheaper at a place like Dykes. Also online there are numerous woodworking companies.
