Hi,

I just had a quote to install a 50 gallon high recovery hot water heater. The total came to $1750, which includes hauling away the old one. Being new to this sort of thing, is that a reasonable quote? Not trying to squeeze the guy, but want to make sure I’m not getting over charged.

Thanks.

  1. The cost of water heaters has risen so much over the years due to the change in technology. Most of the heaters have gone to a sealed combustion, spark type ignition heater. These are supposed to be safer than the open flame type. They also have a filter at the bottom to keep dirt out of the burner chambers. It also helps to prevent fires that start when paint cans and other flammable materials are kept near the heater (which they shouldn’t be). With the old heaters, the fumes could get into the chambers and cause a fire. All that aside, the $1,750 seems a little high if it’s a direct replacement. If there is piping that needs to be adjusted (the new heaters are usually taller then the old ones), that could add to the cost. And yes, a Licensed Plumber is required to do the replacement, especially because it involves gas. But hey, you get what you pay for…..if it’s a reputable company you should be in good hands.

  2. Just to add, with tax the total comes to $2,000.

One other thing, the quote does not mention brand or model of the hot water heater. Is that typical? is it considered OK to ask what brand they will be using?

  3. If it’s a direct replacement and the heater costs around $800 doesn’t the labor cost seem high? I’m surprised at the increase in the price of the AO Smith Conservationist over the past 14 years.

Anyone ever have sucess in replacing the dip tube on one of these?
