I’m on a small budget, and would like to buy two upholstered armchairs. There are probably cheap furniture closeout places or salvage stores around Brooklyn, but I don’t know where they are. Can anyone suggest a place to buy small armchairs? Please do not say “Ikea.” I am trying to avoid big box stores.

  1. Thanks for your comments. My concern about Craigslist and Freecycle is bedbugs, as you pointed out. Incidentally, I interviewed the city of NY bedbug commission spokeswoman and a city entomologist for articles I wrote on bedbugs, and they both said that no spray will kill bedbugs in upholstered furniture. Heat is the only thing that will kill them. The cost of hiring an exterminator to put used furniture in a hot box outweighs the savings of used furniture.

    Hmmmm…considering new chairs after all.

  2. All good suggestions, but be careful about buying used upholstered pieces because of bedbugs. I think private sales–i.e., Craigslist are safer than the Salvation Army, which warehouses all kinds of pieces from many locations, allowing the bugs to spread.

I’m not super-alarmist about bugs, and love used furniture. If you buy something, look very carefully at the upholstery, and quarantine the piece for a few days before you put it in your living room. I’m sure there’s sprays worth trying as well.

  3. I hate to out my secret place to shop, but check out the Film Biz Prop Shop on President St between 3rd and 4th Aves (in the basement). Good luck!

  4. I am SO excited to know there’s a housing works coming to park slope.

Have you tried craigslist? It’s the end of the month, a great time for a fast bargain. Literally ALL my furniture is from craigslist. Best deals anywhere.

  5. Housing Works — one store in the Heights on Montague Street, and one about to open in Park Slope, on fifth Ave and Garfield, where that notorious bath-and-kitchen place used to be before it went bankrupt.

  6. There is a Salvation Army on Atlantic Ave.- and another in Bed-Stuy. If you check Goodwill’s website you can find their store locations too.

  7. The Brooklyn Flea has reupholstered vintage pieces. There is also a store in Williamsburg on Driggs between N 7th and N 6th that has tons of fairly inexpensive second hand stuff. Also Craigslist.
