About a month ago, I posted about my brick to brick window replacement needs.

Well, I haven’t gotten very far.

Bay Ridge Windows only gave me the verbal quote for $23k and never emailed the written. I didn’t want to chase them down, but called over the weekend and was assured I’d receive it by Monday. Still nothing.

Historic Windows quoted $34k. Since I was shocked by $23k, I won’t be paying $34k for my windows. Just can’t afford that. Momma needs a deck out back too.

So today I will try S&E Building. Has anyone used their installers? A few folks recommended I use my own carpenter, but the carpenters I usually use are pretty slow and I’d like to have windows by next winter. Any window installer referrals?

Thanks!

  1. Hi rh,

Mike had his own crew install the windows. He brought in a Marvin rep to show me samples and pick out the details for the windows, like color, wood, frame, etc. He made sure the windows ordered were the ones we wanted. The delivery took about a week or so longer because Marvin for some reason delivered them in two separate shipments. Once everything arrived, his crew got to work and I was there to watch it all. I got a little nitpicky about details and they were fine with it. I recognize his crew from previous work and they did the install. We replaced crappy vinyl windows too and these are so much better. One thing I didn’t expect was how dusty/dirty it got inside so cover everything with tarp or dropcloth.

Good luck with your replacement no matter who you use. Just saying that you don’t HAVE to use “window” companies as some contractors out there can do just as well if not better. Maybe the window companies will realize that and get their act together.

  2. Thanks, all. Unfortunately, I don’t have original wood windows to replace. They are vinyl crap.

I spoke to the rep at S&E today and he seemed very knowledgeable. He’ll be coming by to measure tomorrow.

    My email is: infoATreclaimedhomeDOTcom
Would love some more info on the carpenter.

I’m a little confused. Mike had his own crew install the windows, he didn’t just oversee the company’s installers, right?

Yeah, the Lucky website annoyed me, but I suppose I could overlook that.

  3. Hi,

I posted this before and I’ll just send it again. I also got some quotes from “window” companies and just didn’t like the way things went. I really stand by the work these guys did for my Marvin brick to brick window replacement. I still have non brick-to-brick windows in the back (budget allowed just for front replacements) and there’s a real difference in sound and weatherizing and all for the better. The Marvin rep came out to show me specific samples, Mike did multiple measurements to be sure we had a good fit, they installed with detail so they look good from the outside and inside, and cleaned up after themselves everyday. There was a short delay in the work because of initial window delivery but the work itself completed on time with a day to spare for detail touchups. I have no other affiliation with Mike other than he does work on my house when I have the budget. You’re welcome to take a look at the windows; they are in Windsor Terrace (hence ppsw). Mike can show you them if you’re interested. His #917-626-1254. I think going with a contractor who’s reliable and does good work is a good option.

    Best,
    ppsw

  4. My contractor bought our windows from Lucky Window Products and a friend who owns a couple of properties in Brooklyn says he’s been very happy with them and I’m pretty sure he had LWP install his. Might be worth a try.

  5. RH – we bought our Marvin windows from a lumber yard and hired carpenters to install. Much less expensive that way. My husband also painted and primed the window frames prior to installation which is much easier than standing on a ladder or leaning out a window to do. If you want, give me an email address and I’ll give you more info about carpenters.

  6. RH: I had nearly the same experience with Bay Ridge Windows (though no verbal quote). It was enough to convince me that even if they ever provided a quote, I’d be foolish to use them. This doesn’t answer your question, but following is a window workshop that might interest you (coming up in May). I have no personal experience with the person running this program, though I understand he is well-regarded: http://bit.ly/gLXydX
