Surprised this hasn’t come up today. A restaurant to be called Prime 6 has been mentioned here in the past; at Flatbush and 6th Ave. Its supposed to be a steakhouse and “gentleman’s club”. I think many are reading that as a strip club or similar.

Prime 6 is having a hearing for its liquor license before Community Board 6 on Monday Feb 28 at 6:30. There were signs all along 6th Ave near Flatbush today encouraging people to got to it to protest and block the license. Its at the:
Prospect Park YMCA
357 9th Street, 7th floor
(between 5th & 6th Avenues)
6:30, 2nd item on agenda

I’m pretty sure we don’t need a “gentleman’s club” there. Is this a sign of the kind of businesses that will open to serve the arena crowd? People need to start fighting against that now.

Is there going to be any limit to the number of bars in the blocks around the arena?

Could any lawyers give a quick & dirty on how best to block a liquor license?

  1. After 30 years of clean up, Park Slope is going back to its seedy roots of the 70s. We’ve come a long way since the streetwalkers walking along Flatbush, third ave and 4th ave and now there is consideration of making a strip club?! What a terrible idea. Horrifying, considering the amount of children that live in Park Slope, Prospect Heights and other neighborhoods in the vicinity.

And not to mention the degradation and exploitation on the women that will work for that club.

  2. Just came from the community board meeting about this. Reporting in:

Re: residential vs. commercial – The entrance is on Flatbush, but it includes a proposed backyard dining area, which significantly impacts St. Mark’s Place, which is definitely residential.

Re: parking – the owner was asked about traffic (a la the problem in front of Junior’s) and he had no answer.

Re: Gentleman’s Club – The owner (if that is who he is – more on that in a moment) insists that this is to be a regular restaurant. That use is not consistent with the floor plans he brought, which include several small private rooms and a basement lounge. The information that it is to be a gentleman’s club came from neighbors who stopped in and asked the construction workers on the job what they were building.

He was asked if he would offer bottle service, as is suggested by the floor plan. He said he was serving bottles of wine, yes. The questioner clarified she was talking about bottles of other things. He said if someone asked for a bottle of something other than wine, he wouldn’t say no.

That might seem reasonable coming from another mouth, but this person was astonishingly disingenuous for the entire meeting. If he wouldn’t rule it out, based on his demeanor and the way he evaded almost all the questions, I’d say this establishment quite possibly will offer bottle service.

Re: ownership – He claims to be the sole owner of this business. He’s applying for occupancy of over 260, and he’s never owned a restaurant before. I’m thinking there must be someone else involved. The capital most likely isn’t coming from him – he’s a lawyer. He claims he doesn’t know anything about the Prime 6 website, MySpace page or Facebook page (which someone said had a surprisingly large number of nubile-looking young women as friends already).

Re: neighborliness – this is the largest concern as far as I can tell. For six months he has been unresponsive to any communication from neighbors, has left construction debris in the sidewalk, blocked in garages, and failed to shovel snow. He claims not to know there have been any problems. In general, he’s been a nightmare of a neighbor for six months, and his behavior at the meeting tonight assured me that it wasn’t just a misunderstanding. He was arrogant, oily, disingenuous and just plain unpleasant for two straight hours.

My takeaway: Atlantic Yards is happening, god help us, and we’re going to get big, loud bars whether we like it or not. But please, let’s find someone other than this guy to open them.

  3. It’s the Madison Sq Garden effect. I daresay there will be many more classy new establishments like this opening as we get closer to the completion of the Barclays Center.

  4. From Monday links to Brooklyn Paper article…I have to agree with one of the commenters there. “This isn’t on some quiet residential side street. It’s on freaking Flatbush Avenue!”

  5. “I’m pretty sure we don’t need a “gentleman’s club” there.”

if any demographic needs a gentleman’s club – it’s the husbands of park slope.
