I recently personally and carefully removed 160 sqft of non-friable asbestos tile from my home. It is now bagged and ready to go.

I can’t find anything online about the legal requirements for disposal. I’d like to know if I can take it to a dump myself? Or just put it on the curb?

Old posts run the gamut on this. Does anyone actually know the law or know where the dump is that I can take it?

  1. I checked this within the past year. Non-friable asbestos, that is asbestos in floor tiles, is not considered dangerous so long as you have not done anything to make it friable – such as grind it. It can do to the curb.

I found this information someplace on the web and it pertained to New York State.

  2. yes, i’ve had it tested. It’s legal in a lot of jurisdictions for a homeowner to remove non-friable asbestos, I just can’t find anything definitive for NY. One of those things I would have thought brownstoners would know about.

(Actually only 80 sqft is positive, the rest was negative)

  3. Have you had the tile tested for asbestos content? If not, you don’t know for sure that it contains asbestos and it might well be legal to dispose of it at the curb.

  4. You should call 311 and ask the city about removal of toxic waste; I work with chemicals (Painter) and have made prior arrangements with them to pick up.

ALso call an abatement company and ask them where they take it.

  5. Put it on the curb……

Oh boy that was too funny!!!!!!!!! ROFLMAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you suedeshoes for brightening up my dreary day!

Ok this otherwise useless response is over. ;P
