How Many Kitchens Can I Have?
I am considering buying a 3 story single family house. This house needs work, probably a gut renovation. It has one kitchen now, I want to add 2 more, is there any limitation for number of kitchens in one family house? Thanks

I thought they put the kabosh on those “kosher” kitchens?
believe NONE of what a sellers agent tells you. there are no “summer” kitchens in NYC.
one kitchen per family is all you get, unless you have a note from your rabbi. beyond that, the best you can get is a “wet bar”, with sink and refrigerator, but no stove.
They are not gonna approve it unless you require it for releigious reasons.
Am I wrong in suggesting that the DOB allows what is often called a “summer kitchen” on the floor that grants direct access to the backyard in addition to a kitchen on a higher floor? Thus the number could be equal to the number of units in the building plus 1 assuming that the unit with garden access does not already have a garden floor kitchen.
Of course, this is just what some seller’s agent told me when I was looking at a single family with 2 kitchens.

1 family- 1 kitchen, 2 family- 2 kitchens, etc. etc. If you have more kitchens than what you are zoned for then you have the potential to rent out the space. There is a different tax rate for multi family houses.
In general it is 1 kitchen per family as the DOB doesn’t want you to put another kitchen and then you just put up a wall and you have anither apartment.
The DOB will accomodate you if you need another kitchen for religious reasons.
Thank you all. But why? Why does the city limit my right to have more than one kitchen? Anywhere is the code prohibit having more than one kitchen in a single family house? I have been to some apartments (condos, 1 floor) with 2 kitchens and 1 butler’s kitchen. How did they do that?
Just be aware that if this is a legal 3 family house, you may need three kitchens to be able to get a mortgage. I bought a three family house last year and had to arrange with the seller to buy 3 ranges and 2 refrigerators because they used the house as a one family but the place was a mess and had no ranges and only 1 fridge in the whole house.
