I’m considering renting the top floor of a beautiful brownstone. The main drawback is that the tiny bathroom has no sink. There’s no really no space for a proper sink, and I think the landlord doesn’t want to deal with it right now anyways. I’ve read a thread on Apartment Therapy where people discuss possible options like a camping sink, or pitcher and basin. Has anyone here had this problem and how did you deal with it?

Thanks!

  1. Thanks for the comments. We’ve decided to take the place, so I will let you know what we came up with. Meanwhile, please feel free to leave any more suggestions you might have.

  2. If there is no room for a sink, there probably is no room for sink alternatives like a pitcher and basin. Plus, I’m not sure you can really do a thorough hand-washing in a basin etc. I think your best bet in the bathroom is hand sanitizer and doing your hand washing elsewhere in the apt. And make sure you disinfect the doorknob often!

Think strategically about what you use the bathroom sink for and whether you can find solutions for the various tasks.

Can you add a mirror and decent lighting and soft hand towels near the kitchen sink? Is there another spot where you can put on makeup or do your hair maybe with some wet wipes or tissues nearby (to get the makeup or moisturizer off your hands)?

  3. Is there really no room at all? Friend of mine found a (teeny tiny) sink and agreed to purchase it for her rental, in exchange for installation covered by the landlord. It has to share a water line (?) with the shower so both can’t be used at once, but really, how often does that happen?

  4. I had a similar problem for about 6 months. I ended up using a pitcher with water and having to refill it periodically. It was a hassle but I did end up getting use to it and now that i have a sink i still look for the pitcher. Try adjusting until you can get the landlord to put a sink in.

  5. Ugh, we lived in an apartment like that for a few years. I hated the bathroom configuration but I did get used to it. We bought one of these (link below): a “toilet sink” that uses clean water for the sink part and then recycles that sink water to fill the toilet. It made the no-sink bathroom manageable and is super environmental to boot. Good luck!

  6. lived in an apartment with no sink in the bathroom for two years.
it was pretty fine… we would just use the sink in the kitchen right after. I suppose if you were super caught up about it you could have a bottle of hand sanitizer inside the bathroom and use it before going to the kitchen to wash your hands.
