Anyone have any updates on: 1. Butternut Market; 2. the old Brownstone Books Location; 3. the old flowershop on Lewis (It had a for rent sign, which has since been taken down, and is now covered in brown paper); 4. Inside scoop on the Tin City renovations; and 5. any future development of teh storefront next to Tin City?

I’m just curious and thought I would see what the word on the street it is.

  1. Tin City will be re-opening tomorrow, January 30th, with a new selection of prepared foods–hot and cold sandwiches (made with Margaret Palca bread!), soups, and home cooked dinner entrees. We have also added more seating for our customers’ convenience.

We will continue to operate our ice cream soda fountain and carry our regular retail selection of organic and natural foods, eco-friendly household cleaners, and personal care items.

Stop by and check out the changes if you are in the neighborhood.

  2. That is very sad news about Butternut. I would love one place to buy grassfed meat, free range chicken, really fresh fish like from the guy at McCarren Park (and it’s cheap!), real whole wheat bread, and organic and local produce from small CSA producers.

I have a feeling though that unless it’s really cheap — like from a food coop — there isn’t the volume to support those items. If it’s all fancy soda and organic junk food that has a longer shelf life, I won’t be a regular.

  3. Butternut is stalled until the roof damage from the fire is repaired. It was largely built out with new tile o the walls and flooring and awaiting equipment and then the fire. Very sad.

  4. Isn’t that space too small for that kind of use? I hate to be unkind, but it would be nice if the frame store closed up shop and they merged the two retail spaces. Even that would be a little small for a market or cafe though? That being said, any kind of additional food option would be very welcome. I am glad that Tin City is doing renovations, I think their business model was sort of flawed – they just weren’t selling enough items to pull people in. I hope that they are taking that into consideration and are either adding more fruits and vegetables or more prepared foods. The bodega on the corner of Lewis and Halsey actually carries a lot of higher end bodega items (soy milk, organic eggs, craft sodas) – they often had a better selection of items than Tin City did.

  5. Amzi says a market similar to Choice is moving into the Brownstoner Books location. I’m not sure if he means a grocery store or a restaurant/cafe, since Choice Market is the latter.

  6. We hear that Peaches will be taking the former Brownstone Books space and expanding into Lewis Gallery space to create a market similar to Choice Market.
