Security Camera Recommendation
I’m looking for a recommendation for installation of security cameras for a private house in Sunset Park. Something low profile. Any ideas? Thank you.

Do some research on IP cameras. Instead of RG-6 coax cable and vcrs, you used cat5/5e/6 or even wireless to hook up to your router. You can choose standard or hi-def resolution and so on. Very versatile.
The only thing I don’t like about IP cameras is that they use MPEG-2 video codec for recording, the same as DVD. It can take a lot of hard drive space to record a couple of hours worth of video – much less days of recording. Wished they use the newer x264 or even Xvid.
How stealthy do you want the installation to be?
My favorite lower budget solutions have been any of the standalone DVR solutions you can find on ebay, newegg, etc… they are basically webcam quality cameras, with a windows or linux interface and DVR software that’ll record the footage. They tend to be limited range (30 foot cabling – thin enough to be hidden around moldings, etc)
Even lower budget still – if you’re looking for a single camera… is an actual webcam on your computer, with one of the many free/low cost or open source DVR software packages.
a few years ago I used to run webcamXP off my laptop as a room security cam when my old room-mate used to sneak in and steal my stuff.
If you’re looking for something more pro level – you’d still want a DVR setup, but the cameras are going to be higher quality, and also low lux/ infrared capable. They’ll rely on coax wiring to be installed, which is a bit too thick to be hidden around moldings – so you’ll need to run it in the ceiling or walls… or can be had with wireless versions of the cameras, if there is power at the camera location.
Whats your budget? I can recommend someone who’s done commercial installs for local businesses (a lot of allstate offices in brooklyn) but it might be overkill for what you’re looking to do.
