A two-part question for the group:

First, can anyone recommend a good mason? I need to repair a garden wall (brick) that’s been knocked off kilter (see below).

Second, does the group have advice on how to handle the following situation?

My ground-floor, garden apartment backs into a very old parking lot. The dividing wall is on my property and is brick, maybe 7-feet high. It appears that one of the parkers rammed the wall, cracking it vertically and horitzontally, and putting it off kilter. I only noticed the damage this past weekend as I was clearing out ivy. I should add that I bought the apartment in 2010 and that this wasn’t noticed (if it was there) then.

Is the parking lot owner liable? The parker? Even if I can’t say when it happened? Any practical suggestions on how to handle this? It’s not safe to leave unrepaired.

Thanks

  1. I have been very pleased will all work done by Anthony the Mason, 347 307 4725. He is very very good, detailed, creative and priced reasonably. He just fininshed a garden wall not too long ago. He is a great source for all your questions.. Please contact him Good Luck!

  2. Doing masonry in low temps such as we’re having isn’t advisable. You may have to live w/ no wall for a while. Phone VinRoy – 646 554 4513 for help.

  3. You seem to say that this might have been done before you bought your place. Or at least you aren’t sure. Sounds like you out of luck on this one. And if its not safe, get it repaired. One additional thought is that seven feet would be over the 6 feet normally allowed for these kind of things. Not sure what the ramifications of taking it down and rebuilding it would be versus “repairing” it as it is…
