About an hour ago lights started flickering in our house and then went out. Each of the 2 floors has 3 circuits and 2 of the 3 are out on each floor. Fortunately internet and cable box are working. But what could cause this and do you have a reliable electrician to recommend–I’ve used a few different guys for little things but this would seem to need someone knowledgeable (or not?)

  1. alexa…glad it was figured out. Mine was out only about 4-5 days if I remember. Of course you now can’t run anything that requires 220v or would the jump actually take care of that??? not sure.

  2. DIBS — ding ding, you get the prize!

Con Ed is supposed to come and fix it in the next 3 hours, or 3 days, or 3 weeks. In the meantime I had a guy come and put in a jumper so we can run our business.

I suspect it will take a while because there is a MOUNTAIN of snow sitting atop the manhole in front of our house–we’re on the side that the plow pushes everything.

  3. Ask your neighbors if any of them have the same problem. There are two hot wires coming into your house. One services one side of your breaker box and the other services the other side. If the circuits that are out are on the same side, I would suspect that there’s a problem with the feeder to that side but if there is, it’s likely others have the same problem. it happened to me about a year or so ago.

Otherwise, check the tightness of the circuit breakers with the screw that holds them down.

  4. call Cierella (sp?). they will be about as prompt as you will find. I used them once and they were great. Check other Forum posts (Electrician) for the correct spelling and phone number. I’m on the train and dont have it handy
