We recently rescued a lab/husky mix. He gets super excited when we come home, so he jumps up and at the door. (Our other dog does not do this.) We are trying to correct the new guy, but we are concerned that he will ruin the mullions on the door. Any advice on how to protect them until he learns better?

thanks!

  1. Maybe masonite, which can be purchased at Lowes, attached with a very small finishing nail or brad. The hole could be easily patched with putty and would be unnoticeable upon removal.

Good luck with the doggie! Dogs rock!

  2. You probably don’t need the plexi too thick, so I would think that you can get some at home Depot. They sell cutters for plexi there too. that would be the least expensive solution and I bet would do the trick.

  3. Plastic Land on Church St. just south of Canal will cut plexi. Get a plexi drill bit while your at it and fasten with screws. (You can use nice, small head stainless ones). When you no longer need it just putty, sand and repaint the holes.

  4. There a big plastic store on Canal St. in Manhattan (345 Canal); locally there a plastic store on 3rd Ave. just south of Carroll St. Both will cut plexi to size as well as advise you on the appropriate thickness. The should also have appropriate adhesives. Check the yellow pages (or on-line YP) for others, if you wish.

  5. I like both ideas, but I am leaning towards the plexiglass option as it seems more temporary. Any suggestions where to buy? Also, would the 3M product be strong enough to hold the plexiglass up?

  6. I worked with a family once that had an Old English Sheepdog that did the same thing. She (the dog) was constantly tearing up the front door. We mounted a decorative cast iron grille on the inside face of the door. It protected the door very well, looked nice, and because it was very strong, it gave the dog the ability to get a grip on it, eliminating the possibility of scratching or breaking a piece of plexi.
