The home office in our new apartment will double as a guest room, and we’re looking for a great high-end futon with a comfy mattress…any suggestions on where we can go to get something comfortable? I feel like in NYC, futon choices are Ikea or nothing…but we’re willing to spend the cash on something great. After weeks of hunting on the web, I’m turning to you, Brownstoners! Any thoughts?

  1. I am a firm believer in the ancient adage “House guests are like fresh fish, they go bad after three days”. Consequently, I am disinclined to make them too comfortable by buying anything high end for them to sleep on. The kind of house guests I like are the ones that arrive the day before we go away on vacation for two weeks, they look after the animals, they get free accommodation in NYC for two weeks, and I get a free dog/cat sitter, plus they get to sleep in a real bed.

There are new hotels springing up all along 4th Avenue – let them stay there.

  2. there is a high end furniture store on houston street in manhattan, off 6th avenue i believe. dont remember the name but i sure you can google it. beware, the owner (or maybe the the one who always works there) is a perv and will try to lure you into the back room with a lollipop (for reals) to smoke weed. creepy! lol i really like the furniture in there tho, but very expensive.

  3. Oh yeah, and I always thought the convertible couch-bed “Mid-Century Sofa” at Urban Outfitters was so cute! Never tried it though, and who knows if it falls apart in a week. And maybe it’s only a twin, I’m not sure.

We have a queen size shikibuton futon that folds up pretty nicely into a corner. An air mattress might work too. But I guess those options don’t exactly scream “comfort.”

  4. Check out Resource Furniture on 969 Third Ave in Manhattan. They have all kinds of ultra modern, space saving, dual purpose furniture… desks, shelving, that turn into beds, etc.

  5. i have to laugh a bit about “high end futon”. 🙂 have you considered a daybed? they can be used as a comfy place to read/sit but function well as a guest bed. you can probably find affordable ones and mitchell gold retailers, but for higher end try hickory chair or lee industries.

  6. If you like modern, try Design Within Reach’s selection of sleeper sofa’s. We have been using the Twilight Sleep Sofa in our home office/guest bedroom for a few years and all our guests say it is comfortable. I also like that expands from a single to a queen, so that if you have one guest, you don’t have to open the entire thing up.
