Combining Electrical In A 2 Family House
We use our 2 family house as a 1 family and I’d like to combine the wiring for the separate floor with the rest of the house so we can have 1 bill instead of 2. The usage for the separate floor is so small that the charges are too much compared to the use….

The usage for the separate floor is so small that the charges are too much compared to the use. Anyone done this or have a recommendation
@Susan Elkins – do you know approx how much the electrician charged you for combining the two meters? Is it in line with what pwhite indicates? I’m thinking about making a similar change in my home.
Thanks!
I looked into doing this, but the cost to combine the meters in my case was about $1500 which at about $15/mo for basic charges would have put the payback at 8+ years. Also, as previously mentioned, any future buyers would have to reverse this if they wanted to use it as a 2 family.
Any reasonable electrician should be able to handle this. You may want to upgrade your service at the same time, depending on how many AMPs you currently have. The only hitch is it can take a while for the ConEd approval. The first two posts are incorrect.
We renovated our legal 2-family last year and use it as a 1-family. We changed the meters to 1 meter cause an electrician told us that we would end up paying more for 2 separate meters because there is s minimum charge for each meter.
Its not ConEd who removes the meter anyway. Its your own electrician. They need to get a permit and do the rewiring and then ConEd will just pick up the meter….
I have a c of o for 2 but use it as a one & have just one meter. It was done before I bought (1984) so policy may have changed.
You also might want to do some math on your electrical usage. While each of the meters have an upfront monthly charge, electricity is more expensive the more you use. I have a combined apartment (and a single CofO) and we concluded that the electric (and gas) bills would be significantly higher if we combined them and since they are paid electronically and automatically there was no upside to combining the meters.
I don’t think ConEd will do this without a change in the C of O which would probably make your house worth less to potential buyers
