Hi,
We are in the process of a gut reno and considering what flooring to use for the cellar over the concrete slab. The kids will use it as a playroom so considering this. http://www.flexitiles.com/productinfo.htm

Anyone have any experience with it as we are putting radiant heat in the cellar and it does get a couple inches of water 2 to 3 times a year.

Any advice on this or other ‘soft’ tile solutions would be much appreciated.

  1. How can you put in radiant heat (floor, right?) if the basement floods? Won’t you run the risk of electrification and fire?

Plus what Bond says is true. You can’t put in any kind of material on which mold grows (such as sheetrock or rugs) if it will ever come into contact with water.

This sounds like a very bad idea.

  2. Hoffster
Putting in a French drain and sump pump. Is that costly? I want to renovate my “cellar” and want to make sure all necessary/preventative things are done.

  3. I would agree–use this time as an opportunity to fix your flooding problem. Perhaps French drain with sump pump and at the very least other waterproofing measures. I’m dealing with this issue right now AFTER renovating a cellar, and might have to dig up the whole floor again…

  4. I think you’re putting the cart before the horse. If you get two or three inches of water in the basement a couple of times a year, you really should address that. If you put down any kind of a soft tile, you’re going to have to take it up everytime the basement gets wet or you will have mold problems.
