I was looking to insulate by hot water lines in the basement, and looking around I found this small section of old insulation (maybe 4 feet total) that I’m hoping is not asbestos, but I’d like your opinions…

If so, for such a small amount, what is the preferred way to remove and dispose of this without calling in the Hazmat team and Homeland Security?

thanks!

  1. Looks like asbestos to me. Fire Alarm is correct about the abatement method, however you need to dispose as hazardous waste. Also you will need to vacuum with a HEPA vac after abatement.

  4. How the heck do you actually get it off? The glue can be very sticky and massive fragments remain even if you scrape it. And who wants to scrape it? This is evidently what a former owner in our place did. And I bet they didn’t contain it in any way.

  5. Looks like asbestos to me. Tyvek suit, respirator, gloves. KEep everything wet and tape garbage bags around the pipe. Take the whole mess down and double bag it. Disposing of it is a whole ‘nother story.

  6. The textbook answer is, have it tested to be sure. However, my experience is large scale industrial steam plants and I’d bet my life that you are looking at asbestos. Put it this way, if I came across it I would call the abatement crew.
