Thinking about getting one of these- do they really work? Anyone have experience with them?
I really want to identify any spots where cold air is getting in and these seem like the tool for the job. Here’s a link:

  1. Those infrared thermometers work very well if you take into account the correction factor for each type of finished surface you’re reading.
I used them for years, but I switched last year to thermal imaging and it’s absolutely amazing what you find when you’re looking at a picture.

    See some here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/gatewayplumbing/4280398148/

My thermal imaging camera cost me a little over $3,000 but has saved my clients lots more than that in excess fuel usage and heat loss.

  2. I haven’t used this specific version but if you are asking if infrared laser based detectors like this are accurate – yep.

i own one (computer work) and love it.

keep in mind the further away from the test item the “wider” the spread patter, it doesn’t just pick up the dot.

  3. I too would like to know how well it works. Last winter there was a post on thermal imaging and the word was the camera cost $1000 of dollars. I produced pics of temperature differentials with a fireplace (masonry recessed in the wall) Thats what I would love to find.
