Thermal Leak Detectors- Anyone Try One?
Thinking about getting one of these- do they really work? Anyone have experience with them? I really want to identify any spots where cold air is getting in and these seem like the tool for the job. I use one and think it is well worth the $50 price. Can check for places where leaks are not that obvious.
Those infrared thermometers work very well if you take into account the correction factor for each type of finished surface you’re reading.
I used them for years, but I switched last year to thermal imaging and it’s absolutely amazing what you find when you’re looking at a picture.

My thermal imaging camera cost me a little over $3,000 but has saved my clients lots more than that in excess fuel usage and heat loss.
I haven’t used this specific version but if you are asking if infrared laser based detectors like this are accurate – yep.
i own one (computer work) and love it.
keep in mind the further away from the test item the “wider” the spread patter, it doesn’t just pick up the dot.
I too would like to know how well it works. Last winter there was a post on thermal imaging and the word was the camera cost $1000 of dollars. I produced pics of temperature differentials with a fireplace (masonry recessed in the wall) Thats what I would love to find.
